  • Crafting Place: A Novel Writing Cafe -
This super interactive workshop will inspire its participants to embrace a sense of place in their work. We will generate the ideas and foundation needed to build a novel all your own. Activities will include a series of individual and group exercises and we will write (and edit), a lot!
  • Ditching Formulas: Exploring New Ways to Tell Stories -
How can writers keep readers interested and engaged while telling stories that feel like they find their own way? We will explore some methods for breaking out of pre-determined formulas to explore new and inventive ways to tell stories.
  • How Poetry Improves Your Storytelling - In this session poet laureate Curtis Crisler will explore narrative themes, using examples from the poetry of Sandra Cisneros and Bao Phi. He will show you how to create/enhance your own story; how poetry can jumpstart creativity and brainstorming, enhance worldbuilding, and reinforce the themes in your fiction.
  • I Know You So Well: Building Character in Fiction and Memoir -
It’s a particular form of magic when we bring a character fully to life on the page. Characters are the beating heart of every story— their dialogue, quirks, appearance, gestures, conflicts, and aspirations make a story what it is. In this nuts-and-bolts class we will discuss techniques for building vivid and full characters.
  • Writing Wonder: Why Asking (Not Answering) Makes Writing Move and Matter -
Writers are often advised to “write what you know,” but what if we treat wonder, rather than knowledge, as the engine of art? We will spend this masterclass exploring ways to consider profound questions through art. We will consider research to include reading, observing, listening, imagining, remembering, dreaming, growing up, wondering, and writing. We will talk about how to make our fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir and poetry as vivid as possible.
  • Slicing & Dicing: Multiple Revenue Streams as an Author
There are so many ways to make money as an author besides just writing "a book a year". Learn all the ways to support yourself as an author from anthologies, to podcasts, to coaching, to public speaking. Learn how to make bank in the world of publishing!
